Handmaid of the Lord – The Christmas Story

Song #1: Divisedero – Musical introduction

In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. They were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments of the Lord. Yet they had no child because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years.

Now while Zechariah was serving as priest before God it fell to him by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. At the hour of incense there appeared to him an angel of the Lord. Zechariah was troubled when he saw him but the angel said:

Song #2: Gabriel’s song – Do not be afraid Zechariah

Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer is heard

And your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son

And you shall call his name John

He will be filled with the Holy Spirit

Even from his mother’s womb

When Zechariah questioned the angel

The Angel said to him: I am Gabriel, I was sent to speak to you.

Behold you will be silent unable to speak, until the day that these things come to pass, because you did not believe.

Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer is heard

And your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son and you shall call his name John.

—————————————————————————————————–

When Zechariah came out of the temple he was unable to speak.

After these days Elizabeth conceived and for five months she hid herself. In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said:

Do not be afraid for you have found favour with God, x2

And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a Son, x2

B. He will be great and will be called

C. Mary said to the angel, “How shall this be, since I have no husband”

And the angel said to her:

D. The Holy Spirit will come upon you

And the power of the Most High

Will overshadow you,

Therefore the child to be born will be called holy

The Son of God

And Mary said” I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be to me according to your word”. And the angel departed from her.

Song #4 Mary’s Song – Immanuel

Immanuel, God with us, how can this be

1. What will my Joseph say?

Yet a child grows in my womb

Immanuel, God with us

What will the future bring?

2. Joseph you’re a good man but can you accept this fate

That the woman you chose the Lord chose

To help open heavens’ gate

Chorus

Immanuel, God with us

Immanuel, King of kings

How will he take the news this day

When I tell him that you will come

Bridge

Maybe he will be angry

I fear he will be hurt

Surely he won’t believe me

That you are the Son of God

Chorus

Immanuel, God with us

Immanuel, King of kings

I feel you flutter in my womb

Little child that heaven brings

Immanuel, God with us

Immanuel, King of kings

How will we come to see Your face

And look in the eyes of God

Now when Joseph learned that Mary was expecting a baby he resolved to divorce her quietly for he was a just man and unwilling to shame her. But as he considered this an angel appeared to him in a dream saying:

Song #5: Angel’s song – Joseph, Son of David

Joseph, son of David

Do not fear to take Mary for your wife

For that which is conceived in her

Is of the Spirit

She will bear a son

When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him.

In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, she was filled with the Holy Spirit and she exclaimed with a loud cry:

Song #6: Elizabeths’ Song -Blessed are you among women

Why is it granted me that my Lord’s mother comes to me, x2

B. For behold when the voice of your greeting came to my earThe babe in my womb leapt for joy, x2 (Repeat A)

—————————————————————————————————–

And Elizabeth said “Blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord”.

And Mary answered:

Song #7 Magnificat – My soul magnifies the Lord

My soul magnifies the Lord

And my spirit rejoices in God

My spirit rejoices, my spirit rejoices

My spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour

For he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden

For behold, all generations, will call me blessed

For He who is mighty has done great things for me

And holy is His name

And his mercy is on those who fear Him

From generation to generation

He has shown strength with his arm

He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts

He has put down the mighty from their thrones

And exalted those of low degree

He has filled the hungry with good things

And the rich He has sent empty away

He has helped his servant Israel

In remembrance of His mercy

As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham

And to his descendants forever

—————————————————————————————————–

Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months and then returned home. The time came for Elizabeth to have her baby and she gave birth to a son. When it came time to name the child the relatives wanted to name him Zechariah after his father but Elizabeth said “Not so, he shall be called John“. They protested saying there was no one else in the family by that name. But Zechariah took a tablet and wrote “His name is John” and immediately he was able to speak again. Then he was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying:

Song #8: Zechariahs’ song – Blessed be the Lord God of Israel

A. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel

For He has visited and redeemed his people,

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel

For He has visited and redeemed His people

And has raised up a horn of salvation for us

In the house of His servant David

And He has raised up a horn of salvation for us

As He spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets of old

That we should be saved from our enemies

To perform the mercy promised to our fathers

And remember His holy covenant

‘That we having been delivered

Might serve him without fear’, x2

B. In holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our lives

And you child will be called

Prophet of the most high

C. ‘For you will go before our God

To prepare His ways

To give knowledge of his presence

To His people

And forgiveness of their sins

Through the tender mercy of our God’ (repeat)

D. When the days shall dawn upon us from on high

To give light to those who sit in darkness

And the shadow of death

To guide our feet into the way of peace

Oo, oo

And forgiveness of their sins

—————————————————————————————————–

And the child grew and became strong in the spirit, and he was in the wilderness till the day of his manifestation to Israel.

Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled in a census. And all went to be enrolled, each in his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, to the city of David, which was called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.

Song #9: Road to Bethlehem – Handmaid of the Lord

1a. Oh Lord, as we walk on this way

Looking for a sign this day

We await the promise of your people

We await the coming One

1b. Oh my Lord, we feel so alone

On this road with the gift of your son

How will we ever know what to do

When He comes, God as youth

B. And so we’ll carry on

The long road to Bethlehem

We will wait for the sign to come

Spirit of God moves in my womb

2. We enter in this little town

At every door we stand alone

Oh I trust that you are Lord

But the child comes soon

There is no board

B. We wait for You, You are our King

To You our praise and oh Lord we bring

In my heart there is a hope

And in my womb child of your soul

3. Here is one who pity takes

Leads us where the oxen lay

In the straw with stink and stench

Is born a child all strife to end

And oh my God You look on me

This helpless one who carried Your seed

To this the King of kings has come

Don’t understand, oh holy One

INTERLUDE

4a. Here perfect love in human form

A child of holiness is born

I stand before the throne of God

And at my breast suckles my sweet Lord

To this low place You bring your love

To understand is to be God

I am the handmaid of the Lord

I am the handmaid of the Lord

Song #13: Wish I might – Mary looking at the Star of Bethlehem

1. Looking at this star makes me feel I’m all alone

Looking at this star lets me know that I am not

Waiting with my heart that’s longing to to go home

Where do I belong

Looking for my song to sing until I’m gone

Where the beauty is and where it’s hid away

That’s what I’m looking for today

Who are you leading to the Promised One

Who are you guiding to my newborn son

What is the reason for your light so strong

Oh I know who has sent you but I don’t know why or how

3. Looking for the way now that you are here

To make this world more happy than the one it was before

Than when he entered in crying out for life

That’s what I’m looking for tonight

Chorus

Who are you leading to the Promised One

Who are you guiding to my newborn son

What is the reason for your light so strong

Oh I know who has sent you

But I don’t know why or how

Bridge: Waiting here for you to see just who I am

Knowing that I love him more than I can say

More than I can show

Though I sometimes feel

He’s so far from my soul, I’ll never let him go

4. I trust that you’ll be there, as I walk along the way

Showing me the path, when I go too far astray

Looking to you now, I know I’m not alone

Thank you for guiding me home

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying “where is he who is born king of the Jews?. For we have seen his star in the East and have come to worship him. And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord and to offer a sacrifice.

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, he came into the temple; and when the parents brought the child, Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said:

Song #18a: Simeon’s song – Lord now lettest Thou thy servant depart in peace

Which Thou hast prepared in the presence of all people

And for glory

To thy people Israel
